THE SEA MUSEUM
From its origins to the economic development of Sète in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, the Sea Museum tells the story of the harbour, the people who built it and its traditions.Paintings, drawings, photographic documents, explanatory panels, symbols and souvenirs, objects and instruments, as well as videos and interactive terminals, are all references to the town's past and present.
The aim is to share Sète's passion with the public, whether novices or connoisseurs. From the outset, this new scenography has been designed to be fun and, above all, dynamic, with interactive and playful experiments, Q&As, and so on. To immediately immerse visitors in the atmosphere of the jousts and turn them into true jousters, tintaines, bigues and staircases have been recreated.
For a moment, anyone can become a jouster by grabbing a lance and a pavise.
The main room houses the collection of models made by former shipwright André Aversa, who donated them to the town. The collection was listed as a historic monument by the French Ministry of Culture in 2010. It tells the whole story of shipbuilding in Sète, the story of a family, of the mastery of a technique, of hard but full lives in the service of a trade handed down from generation to generation.
