Presentation

In medieval tradition, the term studium refers to a place of study and transmission of knowledge, often linked to a parish or learned community. In Gigean, the Studium building has long been associated with learning, the administration of local life and the dissemination of knowledge.

Located close to the old church and historic center, the Studium has accompanied the village?s evolution. Depending on the period, it may have hosted teaching activities, community meetings or administrative functions. Its presence bears witness to the importance of sharing knowledge in the life of Gigeanne.

Constructed of stone, the building is a sober, solid example of local architecture. Its simple volumes and measured openings meet the needs of a public place: to meet, to preserve, to transmit. The changes visible today reflect the successive transformations carried out to adapt to the needs of each era.

Committed to promoting its heritage, the commune of Gigean has initiated a project to renovate the Studium in order to preserve its authenticity and secure its use. The aim is to bring the building back to life, while respecting its identity and offering local residents a welcoming space, oriented towards culture and knowledge.
