MIAM - INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM OF MODEST ARTS

This particularly original museum displays in a cleverly disorganised way the trinkets and everyday objects of the last 50 years, which, when seen through the eyes of internationally renowned artists, fill visitors with wonder.
The International Museum of Modest arts, founded by artists Hervé Di Rosa and Bernard Belluc, opened its doors in Sète in November 2000.
In a former wine storehouse, the MIAM has been refurbished by architect Patrick Bouchain, and is now a laboratory open to artists of all generations and backgrounds.
The MIAM makes marginal or peripheral creations the focus of its work, encouraging the circulation of ideas between intellectual and popular culture. Open to the world and its many realities, it aims to transcend genre boundaries, to cross cultures and to shed light on those modest productions. It can also be defined as a place for debate and dialogue, strongly committed to issues of artistic and cultural diversity, and often turned towards the study of social phenomena that give rise to new artistic expressions.
As contemporary as they are unusual, the temporary exhibitions, alongside Bernard Belluc's window displays, make the place as exciting to visit as ever.

 Collections
The MIAM houses the collections of its two founders. The collection is made up of thousands of objects emblematic of modest art, objects that are cherished, treasured and collected by many generations, objects either manufactured or handcrafted. Most of them are toys, figurines, gadgets and all sorts of “bibelots”, which are part of the “archaeology of childhood” and touch us with their visual power.
Often flashy and colourful, they come from the edges of art brut, naive art and folk art.

'La petite épicerie du MIAM' is the museum's education department.
It was designed and is run by the city Scholl of Fine Arts. Art workshops are run by Vanessa Notley, Vanessa Thevenot-Piris and Claire Giordano, teachers at the School of Fine Arts, with guest artists in a spirit similar to that of the MIAM, with specific approaches linked to temporary exhibitions.
The department's activities are open to all, young and old, all year round, making the museum an open and lively place. Guided tours for groups are available all year round on reservation.
