Presentation

Just outside Sète, where the majestic lido begins, stretching 12 kilometers to Marseillan, lies the Villeroy salt marshes, an exceptional 163-hectare site. This former salt-making wasteland, located on the southeastern shore of the Thau lagoon, forms a veritable link between the largest lagoon in Languedoc-Roussillon and the Mediterranean.

The Villeroy saltworks form a fascinating universe where salt, water and biodiversity blend harmoniously. This remarkable site is home to almost 400 listed plant species, flourishing in a mosaic of varied habitats: shimmering pools of water, vibrant salt meadows, characteristic sansouires, elegant tamarisks and majestic umbrella pines. This exceptional ecological diversity makes it an ideal refuge for a multitude of Mediterranean birds, colorful butterflies, agile lizards and discreet wild rabbits.

Positioned on an important migratory route between Africa and Northern Europe, the site offers amateur and experienced ornithologists alike a natural theater in which to observe the ceaseless ballet of local and migratory species.

The ancient "salt tables" offer a striking chromatic spectacle, their waters changing hue with the passing hours and seasons, oscillating between turquoise blue and flaming red. As for the vegetation, it follows the rhythm of the blooms, continually transforming the landscape to the delight of visitors.

The panorama offered by the Villeroy salt marshes is simply breathtaking. From the Pic Saint-Loup to the 848-metre-high Mont Saint-Baudille, you can see the entire Hérault hinterland in all its splendour, creating a striking contrast with the horizontality of the salt flats.

This contemplative walk is accessible via the Chemin de Villeroy, which stretches 3.5 kilometers to the Listel vineyards, or by venturing onto the narrow strips of land that demarcate the former salt mining areas.

During your visit, remember to preserve the beauty of this exceptional site by respecting the flora and fauna, as well as the tranquillity of the area and other visitors who also come to enjoy this unspoilt nature.
