Presentation

Between Sète's majestic Mont Saint-Clair and Agde's Mont Saint-Loup lies the remarkable Lido de Thau, a 12-kilometer stretch of dunes separating the Thau Lagoon from the Mediterranean Sea. This narrow strip of sand, just 1 to 2 kilometers wide, is an exceptional natural site classified Natura 2000 and protected by the Conservatoire du Littoral, which owns 500 hectares of the site.

Formed some 6,000 years ago by the accumulation of river (mainly Rhône) and marine sediments, this fragile ribbon of land today offers a unique panorama between two waters. On one side, fine sandy beaches stretch as far as the eye can see, inviting you to bathe in the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean; on the other, the wilder landscapes of the Thau lagoon reveal their ecological riches.

The Lido benefited from an ambitious conservation program between 2003 and 2015 to combat the marine erosion that was threatening its very existence. Among the projects carried out: the retreat of the coastal road, the reconstitution of the dune cordon with ganivelles and the planting of more than 310,000 oyats, the installation of an underwater wave attenuator, and the replenishment of sand on the beaches.

A magnificent greenway, built from a plant-based binder and protected from the wind by the reconstituted dune cordon, now crosses the site from one end to the other. This itinerary, popular with cyclists and walkers, is punctuated by ten information panels that tell the story of the site, its ecological wealth and its fragility.

The Lido is home to exceptional biodiversity: 205 species of native plants, including rare and protected species such as the Jupiter's Beard and the Sea Lily, as well as a varied ornithological fauna including pink flamingos, herons, egrets and numerous laro-limicolous birds that nest on the old salt tables.

The Lido beaches, widened to 70 meters thanks to protection work, offer ideal bathing areas all year round, while the Listel wine estate, a pioneer of sandy vineyards since 1883, adds a unique cultural and landscape touch to this exceptional site.

During your visit, remember to preserve the beauty of this exceptional site by respecting the flora and fauna, as well as the tranquillity of the area and other visitors who also come to enjoy this unspoilt nature.
