LE DOMAINE DE BELLEVUE
MEZEPresentation
Nestled between Mèze and Marseillan, at the end of the picturesque Route des Salins, the Domaine de Bellevue is a hidden treasure of the Languedoc coastline. Owned by the Conservatoire du Littoral since 2002, this exceptional site offers one of the finest views of the Thau lagoon in the region.
Perched on a small cliff some ten meters high, the estate is an invitation to contemplate, in an unspoilt natural setting. The hundred-year-old pine trees that surround it give off their characteristic fragrance, while visitors can admire a breathtaking view of the Thau lagoon, the shellfish beds and, in the distance, the distinctive silhouette of Sète on the horizon.
This former 19th-century wine farmhouse is a haven of peace where nature reigns supreme. The sparsely urbanized northern edge of the lagoon is home to the protected Prés du Baugé wetland, a biodiversity treasure trove where remarkable flora and fauna cohabit. The silence that reigns here is disturbed only by the melodious song of the cicadas, particularly present during the summer months.
The Domaine de Bellevue can be reached via a dirt track on the D51, or by bike along the Thau lagoon from the Port du Mourre Blanc in Mèze. Cycling enthusiasts will particularly appreciate discovering this exceptional site during the "Tour de l'Etang de Thau", as the dirt cycle path passes right by the site.
However, caution is advised during your visit, pending future developments. The cliffs are undergoing gradual erosion, the ruined buildings can be dangerous, and the site has not yet been made safe. Despite these necessary precautions, Domaine de Bellevue remains an unmissable site for lovers of authentic, unspoilt landscapes, offering a haven of calm and natural beauty between land and lagoon.
During your visit, remember to preserve the beauty of this exceptional site by respecting the fauna and flora, as well as the tranquillity of the area and other visitors who also come to enjoy this unspoilt nature.
