Presentation

Mireval's spectacular rocky cirque fascinates visitors with its mysterious origins, resulting either from the collapse of an underground cavity, or from an ancient marine inlet carved out by the waves. Classified as a biotope protection zone covering 32 hectares, the site reveals a striking landscape of high limestone ledges, a karstic spring-fed pond, fragrant garrigue and preserved oak groves. This mosaic of natural habitats, enriched by wetlands, offers visitors a veritable compendium of Mediterranean biodiversity in an exceptional rock setting.

Botanical and ornithological enthusiasts will find a privileged observation ground, with rare species such as the maritime lavatera, as well as a protected fauna of amphibians, birds and reptiles taking advantage of this oasis of freshness. The contrast between the time-sculpted limestone walls and the lush vegetation colonizing every nook and cranny creates a unique atmosphere, particularly appreciated by photographers and hikers in search of authenticity. Guided tours, particularly during the European Heritage Days, reveal the secrets of this magical place.

The history of the Creux de Miège goes back more than 6,000 years, its caves having served as shelters for Neolithic populations and then for Iron Age pastoralists, as evidenced by the many archaeological remains discovered: tools, ornaments, ceramics and traces of funeral rites. This exceptional heritage, which was also a popular bathing spot in the 20th century, is now strictly protected to ensure its preservation for future generations, a perfect example of how tourism can be combined with environmental conservation.

During your visit, remember to preserve the beauty of this exceptional site by respecting the flora and fauna, as well as the tranquillity of the area and other visitors who also come to enjoy this unspoilt nature.
