Presentation

Between vineyards, garrigue and hills, the Villeveyrac-Montagnac plain forms a vast landscape typical of the heart of the Hérault region. Classified as a Natura 2000 site since 2006, it covers 5,500 hectares and includes the communes of Loupian, Montagnac, Saint-Pargoire, Saint-Pons-de-Mauchiens and Villeveyrac.

Shaped by centuries of agriculture - in particular cooperative winegrowing - the plain boasts a mosaic of natural environments, including fields, woods and drylands. This varied setting provides a haven for remarkable biodiversity, and in particular for 14 to 15 species of bird protected at European level.

In particular, the site is home to almost a quarter of the French population of the Lesser Kestrel, a small migratory bird of prey that nests in old buildings. The site is also home to the European Roller, the Little Bustard and numerous passerines and birds of prey.

Floristic diversity also abounds, with species associated with vineyards, garrigues and wooded hills. Traditional farming practices are encouraged to preserve these ecosystems, as part of a concerted management program launched in 2010 with local stakeholders.

This lively territory is a perfect example of the alliance between rural heritage and natural wealth, offering visitors an authentic landscape to discover on foot, by bike or simply by taking the time to observe.

During your visit, remember to preserve the beauty of this exceptional site by respecting the flora and fauna, as well as the tranquillity of the area and other visitors who also come to enjoy this unspoilt nature.
