LA CONQUE
MEZEPresentation
Nestling on the north shore of the Etang de Thau, on the outskirts of Mèze, the 45-hectare La Conque wetland is a former salt marsh now classified as a Natura 2000 site. This protected site is one of nine wetlands on the periphery of the lagoon, home to exceptional biodiversity.
The path offers walkers spectacular panoramic views over the entire lagoon, the Marseillan shellfish tables, the lido and Mont Saint-Clair. On windy days, kitesurfers add a colorful touch to this already fascinating natural tableau.
This mosaic of habitats, where fresh and salt water meet, has had several lives: salt marshes until 1896, a degraded area for decades, then a natural area restored and protected since 2011 thanks to the Conservatoire du Littoral and the efforts of its managers.
To preserve this fragile ecosystem, particularly during the nesting season of white stilts and other birds, the southern trail is closed from mid-April to mid-October. Only the North trail remains accessible all year round, allowing visitors to admire the site without disturbing its wildlife.
Visitors are asked to observe a few simple rules: keep dogs on a leash, do not feed wild animals, and follow the signs at the entrance. For an in-depth look, the Ardam association and Sète Agglopôle Méditerranée offer guided tours on World Wetlands Day and Heritage Days.
During your visit, remember to preserve the beauty of this exceptional site by respecting the flora and fauna, as well as the tranquillity of the area and other visitors who also come to enjoy this unspoilt nature.
