To the east of Frontignan, nestled between ancient salt pans and pine forests, the Etang des Mouettes is a discreet but exceptional corner of unspoilt nature. Classified as a Natura 2000 site and protected by the Conservatoire du Littoral, it offers a unique immersion in a landscape shaped by the sea, salt? and time.
Once mined for salt for over six centuries, this vast natural area has gradually become a haven for biodiversity. Today, more than 130 species of birds find refuge here or stop off depending on the season: flamingos, white stilts, ducks, terns and seagulls enliven the calm waters and reed beds. A true paradise for bird-watchers.
The flora is just as remarkable, with over 300 plant species: salicornia and sea lavender paint colorful pictures, the giant reed beds are home to discreet life, and in summer, sea lilies and wild orchids add a poetic touch to the landscape.
On foot, in the peace and quiet, walking along the old ponds or watching the flight of a heron, you'll feel a real sense of disconnection here. With little development, the site retains a rare authenticity, bearing witness to both its salt-making history and its essential ecological role.
