Presentation

Saint Geniès Church is an ancient religious building in Gigean, whose origins date back to the Middle Ages. It served as the main place of worship for the village's inhabitants and was an important spiritual and community center.

Over the years, the church has witnessed the evolution of Gigean?s religious and social life. Generations of villagers have celebrated baptisms, weddings and masses here. Its role went beyond simple worship, as it was also a place for community gatherings and events.

Built of local stone, Saint Geniès features architectural elements typical of medieval buildings in the Languedoc region, with vaulted ceilings, a sober bell tower and narrow openings. Despite the centuries, it retains vestiges of its past, offering a glimpse of the ancient religious style.

The commune of Gigean is working to preserve this heritage, through occasional restorations and historical tours. This enables residents and visitors alike to gain a better understanding of local history and culture.

Today, the former Saint Geniès church has been renamed Salle Marie de Montpellier. It hosts concerts and cultural events, keeping this place steeped in history alive and providing a new cultural dynamic for the commune.
